Anna Turcotte
Westbrook City Councilor

Vice President, Senior Compliance Manager,
Global Compliance Regulatory Office at TD Bank

Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte is a lawyer, author, lecturer, business woman, and human rights activist. She is an Armenian refugee originally from Baku, Azerbaijan who eventually made her way to Maine where she now lives in Westbrook with her husband John and their son and daughter.

After fleeing Baku in the fall of 1989 due to the ethnic cleansing of Armenians, Anna and her family spent three years in Armenia as refugees before coming to the United States in 1992. She received her BA from the University of North Dakota and her JD degree from the University of Maine School of Law.
After working toward the creation of the International Criminal Court at the United Nations in New York, in 2004, Anna was one of the first Americans to clerk at the ICC in The Hague, .

In 2012, Anna published her book, Nowhere: A Story of Exile, which she wrote when she was 14 years old from childhood diaries she kept as her family was fleeing Azerbaijan and during their years as refugees in Armenia. In 2013, Anna successfully spearheaded the recognition efforts of Nagorn-Karabakh independence at the State of Maine House of Representatives. In 2015, she was elected to the Westbrook City Council by a 64% landslide.

Anna is the recipient of the Mikhitar Gosh Medal, the Republic of Armenia's highest civilian honor awarded for exceptional achievements in political and social arenas, as well as outstanding efforts in the fields of diplomacy, law, and political science. She has also been recognized for her contributions within the Armenian Diaspora.

Aside from speaking worldwide on genocide prevention, international law, and human rights, Anna has a 13-year career in banking regulatory compliance and risk management.

She is currently the Vice President, Senior Compliance Manager, Global Compliance Regulatory Office at TD Bank.
In lieu of her usual speaking honorarium, MWN Portland is honored to support Anna's charity, The Paros Foundation, which builds school bathrooms in Armenia. We have increased the usual lunch fee so that $5 of each registration can be donated to The Paros Foundation.
