    March is a big month for the Fund. Our Grants Committee makes its recommendations on this year's round of economic security grant applications. As usual, we received an array of applications from organizations doing great work across the state to support economic security for women and girls. This year, we also benefited from significant community input in our statewide Needs Assessment process. Community leaders participated in 14 meetings, from Aroostook to York County, to share their insights on the specific needs of local women and girls.

    Very shortly, the Board will use that information, as well as the Grants Committee's recommendations, to determine which grant applications to fund this year. This process allows us to see the good work that is being done across the state, as well as to understand the needs of Maine women and girls more fully. At the same time, the work done by these organizations to effect social change inspires the staff, board and community of the Fund to do all that we can to increase resources for their programs.

    And it is that inspiration that we will share with you at the Leadership Luncheon on May 23rd, when we will feature our grantees, as well as five amazing Maine women:
    • Samantha Appleton, the Camden photojournalist whose work documenting the Obama administration and covering foreign conflicts has brought her international recognition;
    • Anne Taintor, the Auburn native whose satirical creative work makes us laugh at the roles society has offered to women; and
    • Julia Bluhm, Izzy Labbe and Maya Brown, Waterville members of Hardy Girls, Healthy Women's Sparks Project who successfully challenged the manipulation of images of girls in Seventeen magazine.
    Please plan to join us on May 23rd. We know you, too, will be inspired by these Maine women.
